Gormaz, Camino del Cid

" Into Gormaz they entered, a strong place of might. In sooth one night they lodged there. To San Esteban tidings flew that Minaya was come thither to bring home his cousins two. The dwellers in San Esteban, as becomes the true and brave, to Minaya and his henchmen a noble welcome gave, and for tribute to Minaya brought that night of cheer good store. He desired not to accept it, but he thanked them well therefor"

In the poem of Mio Cid, the size of the castle is mentioned, the Castillo de Gormaz, considered as one of the largest in all Europe. A considerable part of the hilltop fortress, which dominates the entire valley, remains in a perfect state of repair. Built by the Moors at the end of the 9th century/beginning of the 10th century, it started off as a small castle. The oppression of the royal Christian regimes saw the fortress gradually increase in size.

When visiting Gormaz, the tourist should visit the chapel, the Ermita de San Miguel de Gormaz, with its pretty two-roomed belfry, and see the beautiful jurisdictional column.
