Ruta de la Plata is the name given to the area between the Gulf of Cádiz and the coast of Cantabria which links the authonomous regions of Andalucía, Extremadura, Castilla y León and Asturias. This area of immense natural beauty and numerous historical cities has become a tourist attraction for many due to communication links.
Carlos V, the Medieval emperor, was a keen globetrotter and chose Castilla y León for his final trip. Today, this historical and geographical route passes through 24 cities in the region.
Six of the nine Cañadas Reales which have existed in the Iberian Peninsula since the Mesta, pass through the region of Castilla y León. These cattle tracks, considered cultural heritage, are only to be found in Spain.
